How to Prepare for Laser Tattoo Removal

How to Prepare for Laser Tattoo Removal

Getting ready for your laser tattoo removal session doesn’t require much, but following a few simple guidelines can make a real difference in your comfort and results. Here’s everything you need to know before your appointment at Ink by Britt in Mesquite.

Before Your Appointment

Stay Out of the Sun

Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner on the treatment area for at least 4 weeks before your session. Tanned or sunburned skin is more sensitive and can increase the risk of side effects. If you’ll be outdoors, apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ to the area.

Keep the Skin Moisturized

Well-hydrated skin responds better to laser treatment. In the weeks leading up to your appointment, keep the treatment area moisturized daily.

Shave the Area

If there is hair over the tattoo, shave the area the day before your appointment. Do not wax or use hair removal creams, as these can irritate the skin.

Avoid Blood Thinners

Skip aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and other blood-thinning supplements for 48 hours before your session, as these can increase bruising. If you take prescription blood thinners, consult your doctor before stopping.

Skip Certain Skincare Products

Avoid applying Retin-A, glycolic acid, AHAs, or any exfoliating products to the treatment area for at least 1 week before your appointment.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your session. Good hydration supports your immune system, which plays a key role in flushing away shattered ink particles after treatment.

Eat Before Your Appointment

Have a good meal before you come in. Stable blood sugar helps with comfort during the procedure.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area. Tight clothing over a freshly treated tattoo can cause irritation.

What to Avoid on the Day Of

  • No alcohol the night before or day of your appointment
  • No perfume, lotion, or makeup on the treatment area
  • No fake tan or spray tan

After Your Session

We’ll walk you through aftercare instructions at your appointment, but in general: keep the area clean, avoid sun exposure, and let your skin heal between sessions. Your immune system does the heavy lifting — give it the support it needs!
