1. Follow Your Aftercare Instructions
The healing phase is the most critical time for your permanent makeup. Keep the area clean and dry, apply your healing ointment as directed, and resist the urge to pick or scratch any flaking skin. What happens in the first two weeks sets the foundation for how your results heal and last.
2. Stay Out of the Sun
UV exposure is the #1 enemy of permanent makeup pigment. Sun breaks down pigment faster than almost anything else, causing your color to fade prematurely. Once healed, apply a broad-spectrum SPF to the treated area daily — especially on your brows and lips if you're spending time outdoors.
3. Avoid Harsh Skincare Ingredients
Products containing Retin-A, Glycolic Acid, Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), or exfoliants will accelerate pigment fading. Avoid applying these directly on or near your permanent makeup. If you use anti-aging products, apply them carefully around the treated areas.
4. Skip the Tanning Bed
Just like sun exposure, tanning beds emit UV rays that break down pigment. If you love a tan, opt for self-tanner instead — and keep it away from your brows and lips.
5. Stay Hydrated and Moisturized
Healthy, well-hydrated skin retains pigment better. Drink plenty of water and keep your skin moisturized. Dry, flaky skin can cause pigment to fade faster, especially in the brow area.
6. Avoid Prolonged Water Exposure
Long soaks in pools, hot tubs, or the ocean can fade pigment over time. Chlorine and saltwater are particularly harsh. This doesn't mean you can't swim — just be mindful and rinse the area after exposure.
7. Don't Smoke
Smoking affects circulation and skin health, which can impact how well your skin retains pigment and how quickly it fades.
8. Book Your Touchup on Time
Most permanent makeup lasts 3–5 years, but a refresher touchup can extend the life of your results significantly. Don't wait until your permanent makeup has completely faded — a timely touchup keeps everything looking crisp and vibrant.
